The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health, Sicily Kariuki today laid a foundation stone for development of a Burns & Pediatric Emergency Centre and Cancer Center of Excellence at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The construction of the 3.1 billion shillings underscores the government’s commitment to ensure access to quality and affordable health services by Kenyans, said the CS.

“Transforming the health sector to guarantee health for all Kenyans is one of the four priority development agenda for our Country by the year 2022,” she said.

She emphasized that the Cancer Center of Excellence will be a complex comprising modern cancer care treatment services in keeping with the National Strategic Plan on Cancer Prevention and Control.

The Hospital also plans to establish the Hope Hostel to accommodate patients from distant areas to enable them complete treatment.

The CS urged partners to support the project as cancer is the third leading cause of death in the country.

The Burns Management Centre and Paediatric Emergency Centre will provide quality emergency care and eliminate patient waiting time and to enable the hospital to effectively respond to disasters.

While the Paediatric Centre will appropriately handle the unique health needs of children, the CS noted.

She called upon the contractors of the projects to give special considerations to quality and adhere to set timelines. “We cannot afford to waste time, as every minute wasted, is a life at risk,” she said.

During the ceremony, the CS unveiled the KNH ISO: 9001:2015 certificate and lauded the Hospital management and staff for attaining the certification. “I urge you to strive for excellence in your service to humanity,” she noted.
