Dr. Francis M. Kimani

Director of Medical Services

Dr. Francis M. Kimani, a Physician by specilization has served in the public service for thirty two years. Dr. Kimani has risen through the ranks of the Ministry, serving as a Medical Superintendent, a Provincial Medical Officer, Head of Curative and Rehabilitative Services Department, Deputy Director of Medical Services (DDMS), Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services (SDDMS) to the post of Director of Medical Services (DMS) a position he has held since April 2008. As a Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services heading the Department of Curative and Rehabilitative Services he also deputized the immediate former DMS for 4½ years.

One of his most notable achievements as the Director of Medical Services (DMS) has been the area of Hospital Reforms, where for the first time facilitative supervision in all public hospitals is carried out quarterly and ranking of hospitals done using the Hospital Reforms Supervision and monitoring tool which he helped formulate. Dr. Kimani has also overseen the equitable distribution of health workers across the country notably ensuring that all district hospitals have at least one specialist. He has increased the number of internship centres from 13 to 45 and established the innovative Reversed Referral Strategy where Specialists move to smaller facilities to see patients.

Dr. Kimani has also inculcated professionalism, diligence and discipline in the medical profession. As the DMS he is also the Registrar of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and Chairman of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
