Kenya's Comprehensive Approach to Malaria Prevention

Nairobi, Kenya - 29th April 2024 - In an effort to combat malaria effectively, the State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards, in collaboration with the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP), is leading a comprehensive approach to prevention and management across Kenya. 

Currently, a significant distribution of 15.3 million Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) is underway in 22 counties, targeting a population of 27 million individuals at risk of malaria. This process, facilitated by 36 National Steering Committee (NSC) meetings, ensures transparency and accountability through digital management. 

According to Mary Muthoni Muriuki, CBS, Principal Secretary, over 5.9 million nets have been distributed to households across nine counties, protecting approximately 11 million people. Notable distributions include Homabay, Kisii, Nyamira, Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Kwale, Mombasa, and Taita Taveta. 

Starting April 29th, 2024, designated counties will receive mosquito nets, with allocations including Lamu, Tana River, Kilifi, Trans Nzoia, Busia, and Narok. Preparations are also underway to extend LLIN distributions to additional counties in May 2024. 

Additionally, indoor residual spraying (IRS) efforts have been conducted in Busia County, covering 95% of target structures, with ongoing activities in Migori county. Last year's IRS initiatives achieved high coverage rates in Migori and Homabay counties.
