Reaching Universal Health Coverage through counties health systems strengthening

Eldoret, KENYA, 15th February 2017 – The Government will fast track strengthening of County and Sub-County health facilities to accelerate achievement of Universal Health Coverage, Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Sicily Kariuki has said.

Empowering the primary health facilities in terms of human resource, infrastructure and equipment will ensure that the public can easily access affordable healthcare wherever they are, said the CS during a familiarization tour of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on Thursday 15, 2018.

“When we empower primary health facilities we will be able to decongest MTRH and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) thus allowing them to focus only on specialized services,” she noted.

The CS stressed that health is one of the four premium government goals to provide affordable healthcare for all and commended MTRH for offering patient centered care based on in depth research.

She also lauded AMPATH and Moi University, School of Health Sciences for their strong collaboration with the MTRH to improve service delivery noting that Universal Health Coverage is an ambitious goal that requires partners to work in unison.

The CS revealed that she will focus on strengthening partnerships, leveraging on information communication technology and minimizing financial risks to ensure that patients have access to commodities and services in real time.

She pledged to support MTRH achieve their goals especially the decongestion strategy to put up a multi-specialty 2000 bed facility and the improvement of the scheme of service for health workers in the hospital.

“We shall also work closely with county governments to improve health service delivery,” she added.
