4th National Nutrition symposium

Theme: Eradicating malnutrition in all its forms: step up Political, multisector, and interdisciplinary actions towards nutrition resilience.

Date: 14th and 15th March 2023

Venue: Safaripark Hotel, Nairobi

This will be a national level Nutrition symposium organized to raise awareness on nutrition and at the same time share knowledge that has been acquired over time on good practices to address nutrition problem in Kenya.

High levels of malnutrition in Africa is a matter of concern. Kenya, from the recently released Kenya Demographic Health Survey results show markable improvement in the indicators relating to undernutrition however the problem of triple burden still persists. The government is committed to eradicating malnutrition by 2027 that is in line with agenda 2063 aspiration aiming at having healthy and well-nourished citizens by using modern agriculture for increased proactivity and production.

RATIONALE OF THE SYMPOSIUM

It will provide an opportunity to share knowledge and disseminate existing evidence on methods and best practices with legislators on what works and what need to be brought to scale to bring malnutrition problem in Kenya to Zero. It will also give Kenya an opportunity to join the rest of Africa in celebrating the Africa Year of Nutrition. Various policy papers, guidelines and Strategy documents relevant to malnutrition issues will also be launched

OBJECTIVES

The symposium objectives are:

  1. To sensitize participants and stakeholders on the current nutrition situation and the nutrition indicators in the released KDHS and further discuss key areas for concern in the action towards eradicating malnutrition and improving nutrition indicators
  2. To create awareness about the SUN Movement in Kenya outline the strategic vision for SUN in the country including strengthening linkages between different networks and stakeholders for multisectoral nutrition actions
  3. To launch, disseminate and generate discussions and conversation around various nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive strategy documents and policy papers that will support the actions towards eradicating malnutrition in all its forms in Kenya.
  4. To showcase and share knowledge and information on what works well for a good nutrition outcome

EXPECTATIONS

The two days symposium shall be held in a hybrid model with both virtual and physical participation. It will incorporate various approaches to address the four different subthemes, ensure diversity and inclusivity allowing full participation of various sectors to contribute to the discussion. The different approaches shall include:

  • Sharing of best practices through Plenary/panel discussions
  • Oral presentations
  • Poster presentations
  • Breakout sessions to discuss various thematic issue.
  • Booths and Gallery walk – posters and products display.

THEMATIC AREAS

The sub-themes that we are interested in which will speak to the overall theme in the call for application include: –

  1. Agri-food system transformation for healthy diets: You are encouraged to apply if you are practicing nutrition sensitive climate smart and nutrition sensitive value chain interventions for sustainable safe and healthy diets.
  2. Digitalization and innovation for nutrition: We are looking for you if you are contributing towards nutrition through technology and innovations (adoption of digital tools, data etc in Nutrition)
  3. Private sector engagement in nutrition; Are you a private sector player contributing towards eradication of malnutrition through making safe nutritious foods accessible, affordable, and available? Or engaged in interventions around eradicating malnutrition in Kenya? You are invited to showcase your innovations and share experience.
  4. Inclusivity in nutrition (Youth, women, PWD, other vulnerable groups). Does your intervention focus on Youths, Women or PWD working towards improving nutrition outcomes? This is for you!
