Health CS, Sicily Kariuki’s Nakuru and Nyandarua Tour

Nyandarua, KENYA May 10, 2019 – Today the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health, Sicily Kariuki visited health facilities in the counties of Nakuru and Nyandarua to assess key services related to mental health, immunization, diagnostic and primary health care interventions in readiness for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Scale up.

The CS toured Gilgil level 4 Hospital mental wards before commissioning a 64 Slide CT scan machine at the JM Kariuki Hospital in Nyandarua County. This is one of the 37 CT Scan machines that have been installed across the country for diagnosis and treatment.

She said the Ministry of Health will ensure availability of oral and injectable mental health drugs at KEMSA as per the National Eessential Drug List.

“Heath is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not the mere absence of disease. To this end MOH has prioritized mental health. We shall be collaborating with the Council of Governor’s to expand mental health services in the country in the spirit of UHC,” she said.

In addition, the CS distributed vaccine preservation equipment, motorbike and a vehicle to support immunization outreach in Nyandarua County, in line with country target of 100% immunization coverage .

She also toured the maternity ward at  JM Kariuki hospital, to asses the implementation of Linda Mama program.The program has resulted in doubling of mothers delivering in public health facilities hence reducing Maternal and neonatal deaths.

During the tour the CS also registered for Huduma number in the ongoing national integrated information management  system registration exercise. NIIMS will be the central consolidated data base and  the sole source of information on a person’s identity.
