Health CS visits Kenyatta National Hospital

Nairobi, KENYA 7 February 2018 – The Cabinet Secretary for Health Sicily Kariuki today visited the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for a familiarization tour and pledged to decongest the facility to make it a super specialized referral hospital.

The CS said a taskforce consisting of the Ministry of Health, KNH and the Nairobi City County will be constituted to develop a master plan that will limit referrals to the teaching and referral facility.

“The taskforce will review the staffing levels, equipment and infrastructure among others,” said the CS, who was accompanied by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Jackson Kioko and KNH Chief Executive Lily Koros.

The CS appreciated the good work being done by KNH staff and management, and encouraged them to keep up their efforts. KNH is currently the largest Level 6 hospital in the country providing super specialized services and training of health professional both in basic and advanced courses.

However, KNH has continued to provide primary health services at the expense of specialized healthcare due to sub-optimal functioning of public hospitals, dispensaries and health centres in Nairobi City County and surrounding counties.
