Government, Private Sector Deepen Collaboration to Advance Health Reforms
Nairobi, - Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale convened the Quarterly Ministerial Health Sector Stakeholders Meeting with the Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF), led by its Chairperson Dr. Kanyenje Gakombe, bringing together leaders from the private healthcare sector to review progress on ongoing health reforms and strengthen collaboration towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed that strategic partnerships between Government and the private sector are critical to delivering accessible, affordable and quality healthcare for all Kenyans. He noted that sustained collaboration remains central to implementing reforms that strengthen the health system and improve patient outcomes.
The meeting reviewed progress across key reform priorities, including sustainable health financing, digital health integration, resilient medical supply chains and the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases. Discussions focused on enhancing prevention, early diagnosis, quality treatment and continuity of care for conditions such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
On pharmaceutical regulation, Hon. Duale highlighted the ongoing transformation of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), noting that reforms have strengthened transparency, efficiency and regulatory oversight. He announced that more than 2,596 counterfeit and substandard medical products have been removed from circulation, while permits for parallel importation have been abolished to close regulatory gaps and safeguard the integrity of Kenya’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
The Cabinet Secretary further called on the private sector to accelerate implementation of Kenya’s Local Manufacturing Strategy by expanding domestic production of pharmaceuticals and medical products, supporting technology transfer, attracting investment and promoting innovation to strengthen national health security.
He also underscored the importance of the proposed Quality of Care Healthcare Bill, describing it as a key legislative reform that will establish a comprehensive framework for improving patient safety, enhancing quality of care and strengthening accountability across both public and private health facilities.
Hon. Duale invited the Kenya Healthcare Federation and its members to actively participate in the Kenya Health Summit 2026, where Government and stakeholders will showcase progress on health reforms, exchange innovations and strengthen partnerships to accelerate the delivery of Universal Health Coverage.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Director of Public Health and Sanitation Dr. Stephen Muleshe, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority Chief Executive Officer Dr. Waqo Ejersa, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Kariuki, senior Ministry of Health officials and representatives from the private healthcare sector.
