Health CS Hon. Aden Duale Co-Hosts Historic WHA78 Side Event on Ending Corporal Punishment Against Children

Geneva -  - Health Cabinet Secretary Hon Aden Duale  alongside his Costa Rican counterpart, Ms. Marcela Coen Murago, co-hosted a side event alongside the ongoing #WHA78 on Ending Corporal Punishment Against Children.

In the 78 years of the World Health Assembly, this marked the first occasion on which Member States convened specifically to discuss corporal punishment as a public health issue impacting 3 billion children globally.

Corporal punishment, particularly against children, is an escalating public health concern due to its association with a broad spectrum of adverse outcomes, both immediate and long-term.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged it as a significant public health issue, emphasising the detrimental effects on children's physical and mental well-being, as well as their development and relationships.

Kenya stands among the 68 countries that have already enacted a ban on corporal punishment, and we now urge the rest of the world to join this noble cause.

Joining the CS at the meeting were DR. Kittisak Aksorrwong Health Minister (Thailand), Dr. Etienne Krug, Director, Department of the Social Determinants of Health (WHO), Ms. Sanni Grahn-Laasonen, Minister of Social Security (Finland), Mr. Michel Anglade (Director and UN Representative) at Save the Children) and the Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth among other leaders.
