ย In response to the Ebola outbreak in Uganda, with confirmed cases reported in Kampala, Kenya has heightened its alert level due to the risk of cross-border transmission.ย

The Ministry of Health has intensified preparedness measures to prevent potential spread, particularly given the frequent movement of people between Kenya and Uganda.ย

On 12thย February 2025ย Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health, outlined key interventions, including the activation of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) and the repurposing of the Mpox task force to oversee the Ebola response. National and county Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs) have also been strengthened to ensure a coordinated approach.ย

Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and surge teams, including 85 trained personnel from the Africa Volunteer Health Corps, remain on standby for immediate deployment if needed. Screening measures have been significantly enhanced at high-risk entry points such as Busia, Malaba, Suam, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).ย

Designated arrival zones have been established for travelers from Uganda to minimize potential exposure risks. Additionally, laboratory networks have been activated to ensure swift and accurate diagnosis of suspected cases.ย

ย

ย Despite these efforts, challenges persist, including limited stocks of Ebola-specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a shortage of dedicated ambulances for safe patient referrals. Dr. Amoth emphasized the need for scaling up healthcare worker training, mobilizing additional resources, finalizing the EVD preparedness and response plan, and enhancing risk communication to keep the public informed and engaged.ย

ย

ย Dr. Amoth urged all counties and healthcare facilities to remain vigilant, ensure prompt reporting of suspected cases, and maintain a high level of readiness to effectively respond to any potential Ebola threat. Kenya remains committed to safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of the virus within its borders.
