Ministry of Health Accelerates Digital Transformation in Healthcare
Nairobi, Kenya - 29th January 2025 - The Ministry of Health is making major strides in digitizing healthcare services, a move set to improve efficiency, streamline operations, and enhance access to quality medical care across the country.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Director General for Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth, underscored the Ministry’s commitment to leveraging technology to strengthen healthcare delivery under Universal Health Coverage (UHC). “Digital transformation is no longer an option—it is a necessity.
By integrating technology into healthcare, we are ensuring that every Kenyan receives timely, efficient, and affordable medical services,” said Dr. Amoth. Dr. Amoth was joined by Mr. Anthony Lenaiyara, Acting CEO of the Digital Health Agency, alongside representatives from the Social Health Authority (SHA), the Nursing Council, KEMSA, and the Ministry of Health.
The DG highlighted key progress under the Comprehensive and Integrated Health Information System, including:
1️⃣The Health Information Exchange, which facilitates real-time data sharing among healthcare providers.
2️⃣The SHA Registration Portal and AfyaYangu App, which simplify access to Social Health Authority services.
3️⃣E-Claims Processing, which speeds up payments for health services and enhances accountability.
4️⃣Deployment of digital hospital management systems, currently transforming service delivery in health facilities.
Mr. Anthony Lenaiyara, Acting CEO of the Digital Health Agency said the SHA system is stable, with our uptime now at 99.9 percent. “We are not seeing any challenges and assure Kenyans that we will continue to ensure the system remains stable at all times,” he assured.
In Mombasa County, the TaifaCare System has already digitized 91% of health facilities, significantly improving efficiency in patient management and healthcare financing. The Ministry is now urging healthcare providers and the public to embrace digital health solutions as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Kenya’s health system and achieve UHC for all.
