SHA Registration Hits 18.9 Million as Ministry Urges Profile Updates

𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 - 𝟓 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 

The Social Health Authority has now registered 18,988,530 Kenyans, marking significant progress in the transition to the new healthcare financing model. However, 4.3 million individuals who were migrated from NHIF are yet to update their profiles, affecting their eligibility for SHA services. 

The Ministry is calling on all registered members to complete their profile updates to ensure seamless access to healthcare services. SHA registration trends show a sharp decline in weekend sign-ups, with an average of 26,000 people registering compared to 75,000 on weekdays. 

During a media briefing held on 5th February 2025 Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health, emphasized the need for proactive registration beyond hospital visits to ensure all eligible Kenyans are covered. 

Additionally, 3.1 million Kenyans have undergone means testing to determine their premium contributions, but this figure remains low. “Without means testing, many individuals will only have access to primary healthcare and emergency services, limiting the full benefits of SHA,” Dr. Amoth stated. 

Registration coverage is highest in Mombasa, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Bomet, while Turkana, West Pokot, Garissa, and Samburu have the lowest uptake. The Ministry will continue working with county governments and community stakeholders to boost enrollment, particularly in underserved regions.
