EPuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani initiative activated in Kisumu County
Kisumu July18, 2025 The Ministry of Health, through the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, has activated the Epuka Uchafu, Afya Nyumbani initiative in Kisumu County, marking a significant step in promoting clean and healthy households as a foundation for preventive healthcare.
Representing the Ministry, the Head of Port Health Services, Mr. Benjamin Murkomen, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to scaling up the initiative to all 47 counties, noting that it has already been activated in five other counties.
Mr. Murkomen added that the initiative is designed as a nationwide effort to instill behaviour change at the household level, with a strong emphasis on sanitation, proper waste management, and environmental hygiene.
He underscored that the success and sustainability of the initiative will rely heavily on collaboration between the national and county governments, as well as the active participation of communities and local leadership structures.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of delivering preventive and promotive health services as part of the Universal Health Coverage agenda. By focusing on household-level interventions, Epuka Uchafu, Afya Nyumbani seeks to reduce the burden of communicable diseases, improve quality of life, and foster a culture of shared responsibility for health and hygiene across Kenya.
