Kenya Strengthens Investment in Nursing Workforce to Advance Quality Healthcare

Nairobi ,2026 The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening and empowering the nursing workforce as a key pillar in advancing quality healthcare and Universal Health Coverage in Kenya.

Speaking during the International Nurses Week celebrations at The Nairobi Hospital under the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni described nurses as the backbone of Kenya’s healthcare system, recognizing their critical role in saving lives, improving maternal and child health, and ensuring continuity of care.

The PS noted that nurses account for over 110,000 health workers, representing nearly 58 percent of Kenya’s health workforce, and commended The Nairobi Hospital for investing in continuous professional development, higher education, research, innovation, and modernization of clinical training facilities.

She further emphasized that empowering nurses through better training, technology, leadership opportunities, and supportive working environments is essential for building resilient and people-centered health systems.
