Principal Secretary, Ministry of Health, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards Dr. Josephine Mburu has emphasized the importance of food safety in preventing Multi Drug Resistance and other health issues.
Speaking during a meeting between the National Codex Contact point and Accounting officers of National Codex Committee Members, the PS emphasized the need for proper coordination between relevant agencies to ensure that Kenyan Food safety standards are competitive globally.
She committed to support food safety activities at the ministry.
Kenya is a signatory to the Codex Alimentarius which is a joint FAO-WHO Food Standard Program. As a member, Kenya is mandated to harmonize it’s food standards to the international Codex system.
The Ministry of Health through the Division of Food Safety is the current National Chair of the National Codex Committee whose secretariat is with Kenya Bureau of Standards. The Committee Membership is drawn from various government ministries and agencies.
