The National Government has taken over the running of the new Othaya Hospital after its elevation to Level 6.
The hospital has also been renamed Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in honor of the third President of the Republic of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki.
Making the major announcement, Health Principal Secretary Eng. Peter Tum said a team drawn from the county Government of Nyeri, Othaya Constituency
“The decision has been taken after an intense consultations with Nyeri County Government, the PS said and added that the running of level 6 hospitals is within the mandate of the National Government’s.
Following the elevation of the facility, the old hospital would remain level 4 and would still be run by the Nyeri County government.
The PS disclosed that the Ministry of Health would soon post doctors, nurses and other support staff to the new facility before its inauguration. He urged the county government to ensure that lower health facilities in the county are refurbished and are properly equipped so that the new hospital is not overburdened with minor cases.
Speaking during the occasion, the host governor Mutahi Kahiga and area MP Gichuki Mugambi thanked the government for elevating and taking over the hospital, saying the new facility would partner with Dedan Kimathi University as a teaching hospital.
Kahiga said the hospital would serve Nyeri and neighboring counties.
