PS Korir leads Kenyan delegation to the EAC 1st Extra Ordinary Council of Health Ministers

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 8, 2017 – The EAC is holding its 1st Extra Ordinary Council of Health Ministers meeting from 7th -9th  June in Arusha Tanzania. The Principal Secretary for Health, Mr. Julius Korir is leading the Kenyan delegation comprising officials from Ministry of Health, State Department of EAC Integration and the Commission for Higher Education.

The main objective of the meeting is to consider the report of the EAC Joint Re-Inspection of four University Medical and Dental Schools and Teaching Hospitals in the Republic of Tanzania that were closed for not conforming with the Harmonized Standards for Medical Training in the EAC Region.

This is of concern to Kenya because EAC Partner States have reciprocal recognition of  medical degrees allowing doctors trained in one country to practice in another. Kenyan students are also training in some of the affected universities.

The meeting will deliberate on modalities for either reopening or permanent closure of the institutions as well as determine the fate of the students currently enrolled in the medical schools to enable them complete their studies in other schools.
