We have a contingency plan to handle coronavirus, CS Health

Nairobi, January 30, 2020 – The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health Sicily Kariuki has assured Kenyans that all surveillance systems are in place and health teams are prepared to deal with coronavirus.

She said the country is executing the emergency contingency plan for epidemics and has an influenza centre of excellence .

She encouraged Kenyans to limit travels overseas to only those that are essential and called on those who have travelled in the last two weeks to present themselves for testing.

Regarding the patient in isolation at KNH, the CS said that the tests did not confirm coronavirus. “However,  the sample has been sent to South Africa for confirmatory tests,” she noted.

The CS made the remarks today when she inaugurated a new Board for the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council to be chaired by Dr. Eva Njenga.

She directed the council to regulate provision of health services in all institutions in both the public and private sector.

“The council is expected to be transparent, have ethical leadership and accountability in executing its mandate to support the Ministry of Health to deliver quality health services and implement the universal health coverage program,” she stressed.

The Chair of the Council, Dr Eva Njenga assured the CS that the council will remain committed to the realization of UHC by supporting professionalism in practice and expanding education & training priorities to increase the workforce required to provide the anticipated increased demand of the health sector.
