President Ruto Directs Ministry of Health and Partners to Address Flooding Crisis

Nairobi, Kenya - 3rd May 2024 - President William Ruto has instructed the Ministry of Health to collaborate with development partners to address the consequences of flooding.

During the State of the Nation Address at State House on Friday, President Ruto highlighted the urgent need for essential resources and logistical support, such as drugs, food, and medical supplies, for those affected by heavy rainfall and severe flooding across the country.

He specifically mentioned organizations like the World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Food Program (WFP), the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as crucial partners in providing critical assistance to flood victims.

President Ruto called on relevant government ministries, departments, and agencies to collaborate with the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) and security agencies to manage the crisis effectively.

The Ministry of Health, through the State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards, is leading relief efforts by prioritizing the distribution of essential supplies, including mosquito nets, water treatment chemicals, nutritional supplements, dignity kits, and infection prevention items.

During his visit to flood-affected areas in Mai Mahiu earlier this week, President Ruto assured victims of adequate provision of aid, including food, medicine, and other necessities.

The current national death toll from flooding stands at 188, with 125 injured and 90 missing. Approximately 33,100 households, totaling around 165,500 individuals, have been displaced. Weather forecasts predict average to above-average rainfall over the next three months, leading to continued flooding in low-lying areas and increased risk of landslides and mudslides.
