Health CS Assesses Mpox Preparedness, Reassures Public
Nairobi, Kenya - - Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa toured key health facilities, including Kenyatta National Hospital, the National Public Health Laboratories, and the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, to assess the country’s preparedness for the Mpox outbreak.
Accompanied by Principal Secretary Ms. Mary Muthoni and Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth, Dr. Barasa assured the public that the government is well-equipped to manage the situation.
“We are fully prepared to handle any emergencies related to the Mpox outbreak,” Dr. Barasa stated. She emphasized the importance of public adherence to preventive measures, adding, “I urge all Kenyans to practice regular handwashing, avoid close contact with infected individuals, and refrain from sharing personal items such as towels and utensils.”
Highlighting the government's commitment to surveillance, Dr. Barasa noted, “Over 300,000 travelers have been screened at entry points, and all 26 suspected cases have tested negative. This demonstrates our dedication to preventing the further spread of the disease.”
Dr. Barasa also expressed her appreciation for the efforts of healthcare workers and partners. “I want to thank our healthcare workers, government agencies, and media partners for their ongoing dedication and collaboration in managing this outbreak,” she said.
She reassured Kenyans that the Ministry of Health would continue to provide regular updates as the situation evolves, stressing the importance of staying informed and vigilant.
