Kenya Hosts Global Digital Health Forum 2024 to Advance Healthcare Innovation Nairobi, Kenya - 5th December 2024

The Global Digital Health Forum 2024 opened in Nairobi today, bringing together global stakeholders, policymakers, and technology innovators to explore the transformative role of digital solutions in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Speaking at the event, Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Deborah M. Barasa emphasized the critical role of digital health in transforming healthcare delivery in Kenya and beyond.

“The establishment of the Digital Health Agency and the development of a Comprehensive and Integrated Health Information System are enabling us to digitize health records, improve data sharing, and empower patients to take charge of their healthcare journey,” she stated.

The forum builds on the Digital Health Act 2023, which has laid a strong foundation for integrating technology into Kenya’s healthcare system. Dr. Barasa highlighted progress in removing financial barriers to healthcare access through initiatives like the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which aim to make quality healthcare affordable for all.

However, challenges such as the digital divide and the need for greater investment in infrastructure remain. The Cabinet Secretary called for collaborative efforts among governments, donors, and technology partners to address these issues and ensure equitable healthcare systems.

The event also spotlighted the African Digital Health Initiative, which seeks to leverage technology to revolutionize healthcare across the continent. Dr. Barasa urged stakeholders to prioritize sustainability and equitable access as digital health solutions are scaled up to address pressing healthcare needs.
