National Jigger Awareness Commemoration emphasise hygiene in preventing jigger infestation.

Kisii  3 March,2025 The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the County Government of Kisii and development partners,  commemorated National Jigger Awareness Day in Kisii County. The event also saw the official launch of the "Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani" initiative, aimed at promoting hygiene and preventing jigger infestations.

Representing the Principal Secretary, the Head of Environmental Health, Mr. Anthony Wainaina, emphasized that jiggers remain a major public health concern, particularly in rural communities, where they cause immense suffering and disability.

He reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s commitment to eradicating this preventable condition through community education, the provision of essential resources such as footwear and sanitation kits, and the promotion of clean living environments.

"Through collaborative efforts and improved hygiene practices, we can eliminate jigger infestations and protect our communities," said Mr. Wainaina.

He called on all Kenyans to take personal responsibility in maintaining personal and environmental hygiene towards a jigger-free Kenya.

The occassion was attended by Kisii County Commissioner Mr Joseph Kibet and 

Deputy Governor Hon Elijah Obebo.
