Enhancing healthcare access to all Kenyans

Nairobi  January13, 2024 Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, met with leaders from the Nairobi Association of the Deaf (NAD) to discuss key health issues affecting the Deaf community in Nairobi.

One of the main topics was making BERA assessments (hearing tests) more accessible. They explored ways to provide BERA machines in county hospitals to ensure the Deaf community can access effective and affordable testing.

The discussions also focused on packaging Social Health Authority (SHA) services to include coverage for BERA assessment charges for both civil servants and other members of the Deaf community. They also highlighted the need to fast-track SHA training and registration for Deaf individuals.

Additionally, the group emphasized the importance of inclusive employment opportunities for Deaf people within the health sector.

The NAD leaders also requested the Ministry of Health’s support in planning the upcoming World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Conference, set to take place in .

These discussions reflect the government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and improving healthcare access for all Kenyans.
