Kenya is making significant progress in rolling out the Social Health Authority (SHA), with over 19.3 million Kenyans now registered. However, means testing remains a challenge, as only 3.33 million registrants have been assessed so far.ย
ย During the Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr Deborah Mlongo Barasa media briefing on Wednesday 12thย February 2025, the Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, highlighted that 8,813 out of 17,755 active health facilities (56%) have successfully enrolled, with 89% of them accessing the system.ย
ย Sinceย October 2024, over one million Kenyans have accessed primary healthcare services under SHA, marking an important step toward Universal Health Coverage. Despite these achievements, some challenges persist.ย
Registration rates are low on weekends, and counties like Turkana, West Pokot, and Samburu continue to show limited uptake. To address these issues, the Ministry plans to expand community outreach efforts beyond health service points and continue supporting healthcare facilities in transitioning from manual to digital systems.
