PS HARRY KIMTAI CALLS FOR SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE FUNDING AMID FOREIGN AID CUTS

Nairobi, Kenya -  - Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Mr. Harry Kimtai, has emphasized the urgent need for Kenya to adopt sustainable healthcare financing strategies in response to the recent suspension of foreign aid.

Speaking during a High-Level Meeting on Government-Led Mitigation Measures, he highlighted the significant role international funding has played in Kenya’s health sector, particularly through programs like PEPFAR and the Global Fund.

Mr. Kimtai acknowledged the disruptions caused by the funding pause, including potential setbacks in HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis programs, as well as job losses for healthcare workers.

He reassured stakeholders that the government is engaging with international and regional partners to address the gaps, while also exploring local solutions such as enhanced public-private partnerships, innovative financing models, and increased domestic resource mobilization.

He urged county governments, civil society, and private sector players to play a more active role in strengthening the health system. He also called for structured communication and collaboration to ensure continuity of care, reaffirming the government’s commitment to sustaining Kenya’s progress in the fight against HIV and other public health priorities.
