Ministry of Health seeks to anchor the Kenya Institute of Primate Research in law
Nairobi , 2025 Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni joined the Departmental Committee on Health for a key stakeholder engagement on the Kenya Institute of Primate Research (KIPRE) Bill, 2024. The Bill seeks to formally anchor KIPRE in law as a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency.
The PS underscored KIPRE’s critical role in preclinical biomedical research, including vaccine and drug development, reproductive health innovations, and the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
She emphasized the institution’s contributions to public health, environmental conservation, and One Health initiatives.
She urged stakeholders to share their views on the Bill and called on Parliament to support its passage, noting that it would provide a strong legal and operational foundation for KIPRE to advance Kenya’s health research and UHC agenda.
The PS was accompanied by KIPRE Director General Dr Gichuhi Mwethera and Board Members Prof Johnson Kang'ethe and Prof Isaac Jumba.
