Kenya steps up immunization and local vaccine manufacturing efforts
Nairobi, Kenya - 14th May 2025
Kenya has continued to make strides in immunization, achieving over 80% coverage and protecting millions from vaccine-preventable diseases. However, the country still faces an annual vaccine requirement of nearly KES 8 billion to fully meet its national needs.
Speaking today at Afya House during the flag-off of 2,000 Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) units donated by UNICEF, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration with all stakeholders to sustain and expand immunization coverage.
Dr. Oluga also highlighted the Government’s commitment to strengthening self-reliance by prioritizing local vaccine manufacturing through the Kenya Bio-Vaccines Institute (Biovax). He noted that with the support of research and development efforts from KEMRI, Kenya is working to drive innovation and build local production capacity to ensure sustainable vaccine supply.
The rollout of the CCE, flagged off by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, is a major step in strengthening last-mile delivery systems, ensuring vaccines remain potent and reach every child, everywhere.
The event was attended by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Ms. Mary Muthoni, UNICEF Representative Mr. Mahboob A. Bajwa, WHO Representative Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, among other Ministry officials.
