Health CS Hon. Aden Duale Visits Garissa Regional Cancer Centre to Strengthen Cancer Care Access
Garissa, KENYA - - Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale visited the Garissa Regional Cancer Centre—one of only three specialized cancer treatment facilities in Kenya, alongside centres in Mombasa and Nakuru. This visit underscores the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s cancer care infrastructure in response to the rising burden of the disease.
During the visit, the CS inspected advanced medical equipment at the centre and affirmed his commitment to ensuring quality cancer care for patients across the region. The facility serves as a critical hub for residents of Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Tana River, Kitui, Isiolo, Lamu, and even neighbouring Somalia.
Hon. Duale also chaired a staff meeting to address operational challenges and support healthcare workers in improving service delivery. The Garissa centre attends to around 40 patients daily—10 of them new cases—with 90% registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA). Through SHA’s expanded oncology package, patients receive fully funded cancer treatment, significantly reducing their financial burden.
The CS was accompanied by Dr. Joan-Paula Bor of the National Cancer Control Program and Garissa Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane Muhumed.
