KNH Expands Specialized Care Through Strategic Investments and Partnerships
Nairobi, Kenya - - Strategic investments and strong public-private partnerships are strengthening specialized healthcare at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), supporting the Government’s efforts to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare under the Taifa Care Model.
Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale toured the hospital to assess progress on key infrastructure projects and equipment investments aimed at expanding specialized services and improving patient care.
The visit reviewed major upgrades across critical service areas, including the refurbished Renal Unit, which has enhanced dialysis services, and four new ultrasound machines installed under the National Equipment Service Programme (NESP), boosting diagnostic capacity and serving at least 30 patients daily. The Cabinet Secretary also inspected the Mammography Unit, where modern imaging technology is supporting early breast cancer detection and diagnosis.
He further toured newly renovated inpatient facilities comprising three wards refurbished with support from The Co-operative Bank of Kenya and another renovated through the Nakumatt Fire Victims Fund. The projects have increased the hospital’s capacity by approximately 150 beds, strengthening its ability to meet the growing demand for specialized healthcare.
The tour also showcased the contribution of the private sector to health sector transformation, with Safaricom, through the M-PESA Foundation, supporting the refurbishment of the GFB Antenatal and Postnatal Ward and the Main Newborn Unit to enhance maternal and newborn health services.
The Cabinet Secretary concluded the visit at the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre of Excellence, which is now 98 per cent complete. Once operational, the centre will offer affordable fertility treatment and specialized reproductive healthcare, reducing the need for Kenyans to seek such services abroad.
Hon. Duale said the ongoing investments reflect the Government’s commitment to modernising national referral hospitals through strategic infrastructure development, innovation and partnerships to expand access to quality specialized healthcare and advance Universal Health Coverage.
He was received by Kenyatta National Hospital Board Chairperson Abbas Gullet and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Richard Lesiyampe.
