Port Health Officers from 26 Points of Entry sensitised on Marburg and Mpox response and preparedness

Machakos, Wednesday November 13, 2024 The State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards is conducting a sensitization workshop this week for public officers from 26 Points of Entry across Kenya on Mpox and Marburg diseases. This initiative is a key step in strengthening Kenya’s public health defenses by enhancing border vigilance against emerging health threats.

Speaking during the opening of the workshop,Head of Port Health Services Mr. Benjamin Murkomen noted the rise in Mpox cases and the risk of Marburg disease spreading across regions necessitates a well trained workforce  to detect, report, and respond effectively to any potential cases. "Our Points of Entry are the first line of defense, and we must be fully prepared to protect Kenyans and visitors alike.” He said.

Currently, Kenya has recorded 17 confirmed cases of Mpox. This workshop equips officers with the necessary skills to identify symptoms early, implement containment measures, and mitigate outbreak risks. Though Kenya has not reported any cases of Marburg, Mr Murkomen emphasized that preparedness is key and affirmed that the State Department is  proactively taking steps to ensure  public health  and safety.

This workshop reflects our commitment to securing Kenya’s borders and upholding international health standards,” added Mr. Murkomen.
