Primary Care Network Activated at Malava Sub-County Hospital in Kakamega

On Friday, Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, officiated the activation of the Primary Care Network (PCN) at Malava Sub-County Hospital in Kakamega, a key milestone in Kenya’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).Β Β 

The CS visited Matayo Lumatete Homestead in Malichi, Malichi Dispensary, and Malava Level 4 Hospital to review to Referral Services and successes in the PCN Network.

With support from Amref Kenya, Kakamega County has established 12 PCNs, improving healthcare access across the region. These networks have increased immunization coverage by 15%, facilitated over 2,000 patient referrals, and impacted more than 50,000 households through community health teams.Β 

Dr. Barasa, joined by Deputy Governor Hon. Ayub Savula, highlighted the role of digital health innovations like the e-Community Health Information System (eCHIS), which has digitized patient records for 30,000 residents, improving service delivery.Β 

In collaboration with WHO, PATH Kenya, Amref, and End Fund, the Cabinet Secretary also launched a deworming initiative, benefiting over 100,000 residents through mass drug administration for diseases like lymphatic filariasis and schistosomiasis.Β 

Dr. Barasa encouraged National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) to mobilize the public for registration with the Social Health Authority (SHA), further promoting healthcare access.Β 

She also announced plans for a regional cancer center in Kakamega to meet the area’s healthcare needs. The Cabinet Secretary reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to providing technical support, policy guidance, and resource mobilization, aiming to sustain the success of PCNs and NTD programs, and ensuring continued progress toward universal healthcare for all Kenyans.
