PS Muthoni attributes Murang'a County health success to collaboration between the National,County and development partners

Murang'a   , 2025 Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, visited Murang’a County to oversee the ongoing training of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) on the basic health module, their role in community health services, and their linkage to care from households to tertiary health facilities.

The county boasts a dedicated team of 2,090 CHPs who have played a crucial role in enhancing health outcomes. Through the use of the Electronic Community Health Information System (E-CHIS), the CHPs have registered 151,000 households, with 126,000 revisited for routine health services.

During the visit, the PS highlighted the remarkable achievements of the CHPs, including:

  • Screening 174,000 people for diabetes, referring 2,460 for care.
  • Screening 141,000 individuals for hypertension, with 11,900 referred for further management.
  • Identifying 1,760 pregnant women, referring 551 for antenatal care.
  • Assessing 19,600 children under five for illnesses such as malnutrition, diarrhea, and malaria.

The success in Murang’a County is attributed to strong collaboration between the National Government, County Government, the Church, the community, and development partners. These efforts are advancing the vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya.

Speaking during her visit, PS Muthoni said, “The dedication of Community Health Promoters is transforming healthcare delivery in Murang’a. Their commitment, combined with innovative tools like E-CHIS, is bringing essential health services closer to households. This is what UHC looks like—leaving no one behind.”
